Good news, Wolverine fans! Director James Mangold has confirmed via Twitter recently that there will be a special black & white version of the Wolverine movie Logan and it will be shown in theaters for one night only. According to Mangold, the B&W version will be shown on May 16th (Tuesday) in cinemas only in the US. In my interview with James Mangold from earlier this year, we talked about a B&W version. At the time (right after the premiere of the film at the Berlin Film Festival), he said he wouldn’t have originally made it in B&W for financial reasons, but when asked about creating a special version (like with Mad Max: Fury Road) he had only started thinking about it. “We could [do that]. That might be fun. I haven’t had a chance [to think about it yet], I’d be curious about it.” Well, now it’s official, and it will be playing on the big screen. ›››
The wait continues! Over the weekend, 20th Century Fox updated a few release dates for upcoming projects, and also announced a new set of release dates for the Avatar sequels. We’ve been waiting years, and years, for these sequels and we’re not sure when exactly they will show up… But maybe this time it’s official? Only Cameron knows. Fox has announced the first Avatar sequel (Avatar 2) will open December 18th, 2020, followed by Avatar 3 on December 17th, 2021, continuing three years later with 4 on December 20th, 2014, and finally concluding with 5 on December 19th, 2025. So it starts three years from now, and plays on for 5 years to see it all play out. Oh boy. This is worse than waiting a few years for Lord of the Rings! But this is expected from Cameron, and at least they’ve announced something – we’ll see if it holds up this time. ›››
“In the world of advertising, there’s no such thing as a lie. There’s only expedient exaggeration.” Fathom Events has officially announced an event for Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller North by Northwest, first released in 1959. Fathom and Warner Bros are showing North by Northwest on the big screen for two nights only – April 2nd and April 5th. The screenings will take place at theaters nationwide, as part of a special Fathom Events night presented by TCM Big Screen Classics. The event also includes exclusive commentary from Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz, who will provide additional insight into this classic film. Tickets are already on sale here. This is one of my favorite Hitchcock films; I’d love to see it on a big screen. ›››
Briefly: The release date has been announced for the 3D conversion re-release of James Cameron’s seminal sci-fi classic Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Distrib Films US will release T2 in 3D in theaters starting on August 25th, 2017 later this summer. No exact theater list or additional info has been released yet (via Deadline), but we’ll keep an eye out for any updates released. Last August we first reported the news that Cameron’s acclaimed sci-fi action classic would be getting the 3D re-release treatment (following Titanic in 3D in 2012), but didn’t know when it would be arriving. Now we know – so mark August 25th down in your calendar, if you’re interested in seeing this. There is another new Terminator movie in development (with Deadpool’s Tim Miller set to direct for now), but Cameron will regain certain rights to Terminator in 2019.
Briefly: Sound the alarm! There’s a new Terrence Malick film coming out in 2017!! Broad Green Pictures has announced via Indiewire that Malick’s new film, titled Song to Song, will open in theaters starting March 17th, 2017 (we’ve already added it). This is the other project, formerly known as Weightless, that Malick filmed a few years ago back-to-back with Knight of Cups. “In this modern love story set against the Austin, TX music scene, two entangled couples—struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) & BV (Ryan Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Natalie Portman)—chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.” This also features appearances by Patti Smith, Lykke Li, the Black Lips, Iggy Pop, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In theaters soon.
We’re a week away from kicking off 2017 and that means it’s time to launch our 2018 Release Schedule. This brand new release date schedule is now available, filled with currently confirmed release dates for the year 2018. This features quite a few big movies, including Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player Onewhich was set for 2017 and pushed back to 2018. This delay also happened with James Cameron’s Avatar 2, which was also supposed to arriving in 2017 and is now likely (hopefully?) hitting theaters in late 2018. There’s quite a few other interesting projects lined up. 2016 was an intriguing year for movies, with many big Hollywood blockbusters turning out lackluster, but hopefully things are looking up between 2017 and 2018. Read on.›››
Paramount is hiding something. According to varioussources, Paramount has scheduled a new Cloverfield movie to open in theaters on October 27th, 2017. The only information available is that the project is currently titled Cloverfield Movie (IMAX), meaning it will be opening on IMAX screens next Halloween weekend. As for what exactly it is? We’re not sure. Some are saying this is the new title/new release date for God Particle, an original sci-fi movie produced by Bad Robot that was revealed earlier this year to be the follow-up to 10 Cloverfield Lane. Others are speculating that perhaps Paramount has some tricks up their sleeves, and is delaying the release of God Particle for the time being. We have to wait to find out the truth. ›››
It might be finally getting a proper release – 10 years later. 20th Century Fox is letting theaters screen the cult comedy Idiocracy, from writer/director Mike Judge, in theaters later this year just before the election. The Alamo Drafthouse chain has at least 25 of their cinemas listing a screening on October 4th, and more theaters across the US are being listed as well. Idiocracy is the sci-fi comedy from Mike Judge about an average guy, played by Luke Wilson, who is frozen and wakes up in the future – only to discover it’s an idiotic place with Terry Crews as President Camacho running the country, and Brawndo being distributed instead of water. It’s a totally wacky comedy, but it’s also becoming increasingly prescient – especially with a buffoon as idiotic as Camacho in the running for President. Glad to see Fox letting this film back in theaters. ›››
Good news, Godzilla fans! The new Godzilla movie from Toho Company in Japan will actually be hitting US theaters this year as well. Godzilla Resurgence, or Shin Gojira as its known in Japan, opens in theaters over there starting July 29th – this month. Announced during Comic-Con, anime distributor Funimation has revealed that they will be releasing Shin Gojira in US theaters sometime in “late 2016”. The announcement was made on Funimation’s Twitter, but no exact date has been set yet, though we expect to see it sometime late in the fall around November or December. We just posted the latest full trailer for Godzilla Resurgence this week and I think it looks badass, hearkening back to the original man-in-suit films from the 1950s-60s. ›››
